Overview

The main task and responsibility of the local government institutions operating in Sri Lanka is to nurture and develop the quality of life of the people living in their local government area by providing quality services and infrastructure. Accordingly, the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha as an institution dedicated solely to public service, on 12.05.1987, published in the Special Gazette No. 453/11 of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka on 11.05.1987, declared that the Elpitiya Municipal Council, Goluwamulla – Omatta, Ambana – The Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha was replaced under Section (2) 1 of the Local Councils Act No. 15 of 1987 incorporating the Pinikahana Village Councils. Also, through the establishment of an Elpitiya local council sub-office in Amugoda village, further commitment has been made for public service.

The area of ​​Elpitiya local council with an area of ​​52 square miles is spread from one side to Avittawa River, one side to Atakohota Canal, another side to Kurundugaha Hathamek from the city bridge to Moba and on the other side to Horangalla Guruwala.

Dedicated to the welfare of the people of Elpitiya who are recovering from a proud past, the Elpitiya Pradeshiya Sabha is constantly working shoulder to shoulder with the people and performing its services. It is the ultimate ambition of the Elpitiya Regional Council to perfect this proud city, which has been self-sufficient since the previous Sinhalese king’s children, with 21st century technology.

The area of ​​Elpitiya local council which belongs to the eastern Bentara Vallavita of the Galle district of the southern province is an area with normal mountains and hills and rains for most of the year. Fed by paddy farming, this area consists of export crops like tea, coconut and cinnamon. A large amount of land in the local council area is also maintained as estates belonging to the State Plantation Corporation. A large part of the population is settled in these estates. By providing necessary facilities for agriculture and creating self-employment opportunities, their living conditions can be improved.
